Julie Rodriguez Jones Receives Five Special Recognition Awards in International Exhibition

Spanish Springs, NV April 5, 2007 -- Artist JULIE RODRIGUEZ JONES of Spanish Springs, Nevada has received five “Special Recognition” Awards for her artwork in the "9th Annual Judeo-Christian International Juried Art Exhibition” at the Upstream People Gallery in Omaha.

Jones began creating liturgical art in 2005 when The Rev. Steve Wren of Sparks First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, asked Jones, a member of the congregation, if she might create some stoles and banners based on his Advent theme of "light."  That was the catalyst.  Jones had just moved to Sparks the year before from San Pablo, California after a life long career in government contracting at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. She had sought out a progressive and welcoming congregation and found it at this church. Since that first request from the Rev. Wren, the contracting specialist turned artist, redirected her focus to liturgical art.

From those first five banners and matching ministerial stoles, Jones has created dozens of liturgical themed banners and stoles when can now be seen nationally and overseas.  Many of her pieces come from inspiration received from Rev. Wren's sermons--some folks really listen in church! Jones decided to submit five of the pieces created for the church to the international exhibition in Omaha. All five of her pieces were accepted into the show and all five received Special Recognition Awards.

This international exhibition received over 500 entries from around the world and 97 artists were selected by the juror Larry Bradshaw, Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  Of those only a fraction received awards. Professor Bradshaw states this about the specially recognized work: “Julie Rodriguez Jones of Spanish Springs, NV has developed some very respectable liturgical artworks; a series of banners and matching stoles.”  “All of these are wonderful contemporary and useful icons.”
