On August 27, 2003 the planet Mars was the closest to Earth that it had been in almost 60,000 years. On the evening of August 27, 2004 I went outside to see this once in a life time event and though I had seen Mars through a large telescope in the days prior to its “Closest Approach,” that particular evening was special. Though the sky was mostly obscured by ominous clouds, Mars still managed to shine through. This is a painting of that special event.
